Seattle’s vegan community has faced challenges in recent years, with several beloved establishments closing due to various factors, including economic pressures. Supporting the remaining fully vegan and vegetarian businesses helps sustain the city’s plant-based culinary scene and promotes ethical, sustainable dining options.
Note: While Finch & Pine in Capitol Hill offers many vegan options, it is not a fully vegan establishment as it still serves some animal products.

Seattle’s vegan dining scene has experienced notable changes over the past year, with several beloved establishments closing their doors. In January 2025, Plum Bistro and its sibling spot, Plum Chopped, both shuttered after 16 years of serving inventive vegan fare on Capitol Hill. Chef Makini Howell, a trailblazer in Seattle’s vegan movement, is now focusing on her tofu business in Georgetown .
Another closure was Araya’s Place in Madison Valley, which ended its decade-long run in early 2024. The family-owned vegan Thai restaurant continues to operate locations in the University District and Bellevue.
Ben & Esther’s Vegan Jewish Deli on Capitol Hill, a newer addition to the scene, closed at the end of 2023 .
These closures reflect broader challenges, including Seattle’s new $20.76 minimum wage law, which has placed financial strain on small businesses .
To the owners, chefs, and staff who poured their hearts into these establishments: thank you. Your dedication brought joy and nourishment to many. As we bid farewell, we carry forward the flavors and memories you've gifted us, wishing you success in your future endeavors.
