I couldn’t stay away! I’m back in Hawaii for the second time this year. This trip was a bit different though—it was a full family affair. We did 5 days in Maui and another 6 days in Honolulu with a party of 8 (including the in-laws!).
Traveling with a big group can be a little stressful—trying to coordinate everyone’s energy levels and hunger pangs is no joke—but planning ahead is the secret sauce. We stayed at the Sheraton Waikiki for 5 nights and treated ourselves to one night at the Royal Hawaiian (The Pink Palace!).
If you are heading to Honolulu and need to keep it vegan while keeping the family happy, here is everything we ate and did!
On our first night, we needed a spot that could handle 8 people. We went to Noi Thai, just a 5-minute walk from the Sheraton.
The Vibe: Excellent. Because we were a big group, they put us in a private room which was perfect.
The Food: They have a vegetarian section, and the staff was super helpful in making things vegan. I had the Pad See Ew (customized). It was delicious and a great start to the trip.
🥥 Morning Fuel: ALO Café
The Sheraton didn't have many vegan options for breakfast, so I took a nice 15-minute morning walk to ALO Café.
The Order: A Piña Colada Smoothie and an Acai Bowl (ordered without honey). Everything was so fresh!
Must-Buy: I grabbed their Banana Bread for later. Trust me, you’ll want snacks for the beach.
We had my fiancé’s mother and stepfather with us, so standing on the beach all day wasn't an option. We drove to Costco to "rent" beach chairs (buy them, use them, and return them before leaving—it's way cheaper than daily rentals at the beach!).
Lunch Find: Did you know Costco has vegan sushi? I grabbed the Inari (sweet tofu pockets with rice). Simple, vegan, and perfect for a quick lunch.
This was a highlight! We took the whole family (non-vegans included) to this all-vegan sushi spot.
The Food: I ordered the Shoyu Ramen, Cauliflower Bites (to share), and the Eggplant Roll.
The Experience: My rolls took about 20 extra minutes to arrive (I think they forgot me in the chaos of a big table!), but the food was so good I forgave them immediately.
Drink Tip: They have Matcha Beer. Yes, really. You have to try it!
The next day we hit the Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve. Since we had our Costco chairs, we set up a base camp with a DIY picnic:
Costco juices and water.
That leftover Banana Bread from ALO Café.
Carrots I picked up from Target.
Okay, this place deserves its own paragraph. I went with my fiancé on a date night to Floralia, and it was so good we invited the entire family back the next night.
The Pizza: The crust is top-notch. I got the Paradiso (hold the jalapeños, I can't do spice!) and the Margarita. My fiancé is super picky about vegan cheese, and even he said this is the best vegan pizza he’s ever had.
The Cannoli: Guys. The vegan cannoli here? A home run. It is the best thing I have ever put in my mouth.
Round 2: On the second night, I tried the Pesto Pizza. Also wonderful. This place is a vibe.
You can't go to Hawaii and not get a Dole Whip (it's vegan!). We took the train tour to explore the grounds and saw the cutest thing ever: three baby wild pigs eating near a cacao tree! 🐖
Lunch Stop: We went to a Cider House afterwards (I totally forgot the name and the photo, oops!). I had a great Banh Mi Sandwich and tried a flight of ciders—Ube and Mojito flavors were wild but good!
We spent our last night at the Royal Hawaiian next door to the Sheraton. It’s very pink and the amenities are lovely, but the food options? Meh.
Mai Tai Bar: Great view, and the Mai Tai was the bomb (fresh pineapple!), but the only vegan food was hummus, sourdough, and veggie sticks. Good bread, but pricey for snacks.
Peace Café: Since I was still hungry, we explored outside the resort and found this fully vegan gem. It’s in a less "touristy" looking area, but don't let that scare you! The people are so nice.
I ate: Katsu Curry Plate and a Matcha Latte. Seriously some of the best food of the trip.
@Peace Cafe
On our last day, we left our bags at the resort and visited the Pearl Harbor National Memorial. We took the boat out to the bombing site. It is incredibly sad, but a beautiful way to pay respects to the lives lost. It was a meaningful end to the trip.
Explore Outside the Resort: The best food (like Peace Café and Floralia) is usually found in the smaller spots, not the big hotels.
Airline Warning: Hawaiian Airlines (Seattle to Islands) provided zero vegan options. Go prepared!
Airport Hours: The Honolulu airport food court closes at 8:00 PM. I didn't know this and ended up starving on the flight home because I couldn't grab dinner beforehand.
Seattle Tip: If you are flying out of SEA, stop at Floret. They have great vegetarian/vegan options to pack for the plane.
Timing: Going in summer wasn't too bad temperature-wise, but I highly recommend Winter. You avoid the heat and get to see the whales! 🐋
